There's just somethin' about fall that makes me want to bake. Maybe it's the crisp air, the changing leaves, or the pumpkin spice everything. Whatever it is, these caramel apple bars are my go-to recipe when I want to capture that cozy autumn vibe. One year my son had the flu and coudn't get out, baking these bars got him up and feeling better, maybe it was the smell of cinnamon, who knows. I know for sure these are comfort food in every sense.

These bars aren't just delicious; they're also surprisingly easy to make. No fancy equipment or complicated techniques required. Just a few simple ingredients, a little bit of time, and you'll have a dessert that's guaranteed to impress. Honestly, my baking skills aren't exactly professional, but I've made these bars countless times, and they always turn out great. If I can do it, you definitely can!

🍽 Ingredients

📖 Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking pan. Or use parchment paper, either way works great.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, and salt.
  3. Add the melted butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. You can use a pastry blender or just your hands.
  4. Press about 2/3 of the crumb mixture into the prepared baking pan to form the crust. Press it firmly and evenly.
  5. Bake the crust for 12-15 minutes, or until lightly golden brown. Keep a close eye on it so it doesnt burn!
  6. While the crust is baking, prepare the apple filling. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss to coat the apples evenly.
  7. Remove the crust from the oven and spread the apple mixture evenly over the top.
  8. Sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture over the apples. Gently press it down so it doesn't fall off while baking.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out clean.
  10. Remove the bars from the oven and let them cool completely in the pan. This is important so they set properly!
  11. Once the bars are cool, drizzle with caramel sauce. You can use store-bought caramel sauce or make your own. I usually buy mine; shhh don't tell anyone.
  12. Cut the bars into squares and serve. Enjoy these warm, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or just as they are!

📝 Notes

  • For extra flavor, add 1/2 cup of chopped nuts (such as pecans or walnuts) to the crumb topping.
  • Use a variety of apples for a more complex flavor. I like to use a combination of Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Gala apples.
  • If you don't have brown sugar, you can use granulated sugar instead. Just add 1 tablespoon of molasses to the sugar.
  • Store leftover bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
