Let's talk about food storage. I know, I know-food storage isn't the most exciting topic. But trust me, getting this right changes your life. It's not just about keeping your food from going bad; it's saving money, reducing food waste, and even helping you make healthier choices. Think about it. How many times have you purchased a great bunch of fresh produce just to see it go bad before you could use it, or bought items in bulk with great prices only to realize you had no place to store them? These are those kinds of things that can make one feel like they are just throwing money away. That is where smart food storage comes in.

The Secret to a Happy and Healthy Kitchen

Okay, so how does one turn the kitchen into a food storage utopia? Well, here are a few guiding principles:

  • FIFO - First In, First Out: This is perhaps the most basic but important rule. Always use older items before newer items to prevent expiration and subsequently finding their way into the trash. It's one simple habit that will help make a big difference in your kitchen.
  • Appropriate Storage: Not all foods are created equal. Some require specific storage conditions to keep them fresh longer. Now, just think about your refrigerator and your freezer. Of course, you'll want those to be organized, too! I like things I use a lot to be easily accessible. I also like to take full advantage of vertical space. It's crazy how much more you can fit into fridge and freezer if you are creative with the way things are stored!
  • The Right Containers: You have probably heard of glass or reusable containers; there are a lot of great options out there. Everything from airtight containers and reusable ziploc bags to those cute, colored mason jars. It's all about finding what works best for you and your style. First of all, a game changer is: labeling. Don't care if you think that you will remember exactly what that particular item is because, in some months, you will be thanking yourself for doing that. I would advocate using permanent markers to make my labels, but there are cool sticker sets too that are very good for making your pantry look not only organized but very nice and up in the style.
  • Regular Inventory: Make it a point to check on your refrigerator and pantry at least once a week, if not more, considering how fresh produce appears to have a short life. This helps you identify what is nearing expiration and give due consideration while meal planning. You'll be much more aware of what you do and do not have in inventory, avoiding the prospect of an accidental and unnecessary purchase of items.

Save Money, Save Food, Save the Planet

What are the real benefits of embracing food storage? Well, beyond the obvious-keeping your meals fresh and delicious besides saving on food waste, it is one great way to save money. Think about it: buying in bulk will generally be much more economical than smaller buys, but it is useless if you cannot store it properly. You can buy produce when it's in season and cheaper by using your freezer more strategically, thus stretching your food budget even further. And it's good for the environment. Reducing food waste is one of the easiest and most impactful ways to contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle. It's a win-win-win!

Storage Solutions I Swear By

Herewith are some of my food storage solutions that have changed the way I cook and shop:

  • Vacuum Sealer: Oh, the vacuum sealer is a saver! Sucks the air out of bags, prevents freezer burn, and can keep food for longer. Very much so, I just love this for meat and fish. You can buy preportioned vacuum-sealed bags at the store, or you can get a vacuum sealer yourself. You'll be surprised how much you can fit in your freezer! You'll also find it very helpful to put leftovers in vacuum-sealed bags. Glass Storage Containers: Reusable, airtight, and microwave-safe, perfect for storing leftovers, snacks, or prep meals. Can also organize your fridge and look chic on your counters. I use these to meal prep. It's so much easier to grab a healthy snack when you got it ready to go! Mason Jars: These are so versatile. Great to store dry goods such as beans, rice, and oats, primarily for things that one is going to consume quite frequently in the pantry. They even look nice on your shelves. As a matter of fact, I ferment sauerkraut myself in mason jars-it is just that easy, and it tastes amazing.
  • Freezer Bags: These are a classic for a reason! They are great for meats and veggies but also really great for freezing your homemade sauces. I also use them for snacks to put in my kids' lunches. You can avoid the plastic waste of disposable bags if you buy reusable freezer bags that are super durable and can be washed over and over again. Remember, there are so many food storages you can get that you will find the perfect ones for your kitchen. It's just about finding what works for you and best suits your lifestyle. Don't be afraid to experiment until you find what you like!

Making Storage Work For You

You might think all these things are great, and you don't have a ton of extra space. I completely understand that. But don't let that stop you! There are ways to maximize the space you do have. Think vertically! Utilize shelving, stacking bins, and even hang baskets from the ceiling to maximize your storage capabilities.

Also, get rid of stuff that you either don't need or hardly ever use. This makes it easier to find what you need and keeps your kitchen clutter-free.

And remember, food storage isn't one-size-fits-all. It is about finding what works for your life and space, and having fun with it, too. Now go ahead to make your kitchen a place you feel good storing, using, and enjoying food in!
