My First Brewpub Experience
I am the first to admit it: I used to be a bit of a beer snob. You know, the kind that drank nothing but imported lagers or craft beers from some hip brewery. I had no idea what to expect on my first visit to the brewpub with a friend. Let me tell you, though, it completely changed my whole outlook on beer. The atmosphere was just so friendly, and the brewers were so passionate about their craft.
I found a whole new world of flavors-from hoppy IPAs down to smooth stouts, each brew with its own story. It wasn't until then that I realized the true magic of craft breweries does not reside in the mere beer but in the experience of it all.
Or if just looking to venture out of your beer comfort zone, I highly recommend checking out a local brewpub. But before you do, here are a few helpful tips I'd like to share with you in order to make your experience that much better.

TIP 1 Arrive Hungry-and Thirsty!
Craft breweries are much more than just drink stops. Many of them have luscious food, ranging from gourmet pizzas to heartier pub fare; some even have food trucks parked outside. This provides a great avenue to grab a meal with some quality drinks and share time with other fellow beer enthusiasts. The atmosphere is generally buzzy, and more often than not, one finds live music or events happening.
One brewery that I went into actually had a live blues band playing, so everyone was having a really good time. It is a great place to meet new people and just expand your social circle. Plus, you get to sample a number of beers to get your favorites; you can even get a flight, a sampling of different beers, to essentially have a taste of everything they have to offer.

Tip 2: Not Afraid to Ask Questions
The brewers are true masters of their craft. Always ready and willing to share knowledge about the process that goes into the making of their beers, the ingredients they use, and also the styles they have available. You know, a sort of mini beer education session!
I once asked a brewer, for example, what the difference was between an IPA and a Pale Ale. He explained it real interestingly, and I ended up learning a lot about different hops and ways of brewing. Don't be bashful, ask them! You'll be amazed what you learn about your favorite brews.

Tip 3: Take a Tour If You Can
Most breweries have tours, which will help you understand the magic behind beer-making. In fact, this may be a good opportunity to learn about the history of the brewery, about various equipment being utilized, and why these special flavors are distinct from the rest.
I recently took a tour through a local brewery and was in awe of the entire process-from mashing of the grains to fermentation and bottling. It really gave me a new appreciation for all of the hard work and dedication that goes into making great beer. Plus, you might just sample some of the brews in progress!

Tips 4: Support Local Craft Breweries
When you choose a craft brewery, you're not just supporting a business, you are helping out a community. When thinking about your local craft brewer, they often think about their local area - and use fresh, local ingredients whenever they can. It is good to know your community and enjoy great tasting, high-quality beer.
Whenever I can, I try to make it a point to support local craft breweries. It's about the beer, but more than that, it's about supporting small businesses and fostering community.
Tip 5: Experiment, Experiment, Experiment!
Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. That is the beauty of craft beer-there are so many different styles and flavors. You may find a new favorite.
I used to be a stout person through and through. But then I had this fruity saison, and, man, there's a whole world of delicious beers I'd never even considered. I'm so glad I took a chance on something new because it's actually one of my beers of choice now.
But next time you visit a craft brewery, don't be afraid to ask for recommendations and try something that's out of your usual range. You never know-you might find your next favorite brew.
