Apples

apple brownies recipe: a unique twist on a classic

My First Disaster Brownie Attempt

Truthfully speaking, my attempt at baking brownies was something less than perfect. I will never forget that sinking feeling-a pun intended-as I pulled this brick-like almost inedible mass from the oven. This was so hard that, I think, I could use it as a doorstop. Obviously, this was some sort of discrepancy in my altitude or something, right; the recipe from that dusty old cookbook didn't account for that sort of thing. Still, in some respects, that one culinary catastrophe actually fueled my determination: I couldn't be beat by some stupid brownie. This recipe is representative of many months-and a number of failed batches-of experimentation. It's about persistence and a dash of good luck, and, really, my ultimate love of all things chocolate. And yes, it's completely foolproof-or at least, pretty darn close!.

Apple Brownies: A Deliciously Unexpected Combination

What makes them so special? Apples! I know, I know-it sounds a little strange, right? But listen up. The sweetness and tartness of apples complement the richness of chocolate in such a nicely surprising way. They provide a nice textural contrast, also; the soft, tender apple chunks offset the fudgy brownie base. Trust me, it's an explosion of flavors in your mouth. You are definitely a bit of a gourmet adventurer, or even if you're just plain curious; you have to try them. Think of it this way: it's as if a classic got more sophisticated and a little quirkier-a twist on a dessert beloved by all. You can't go wrong with them.

Ingredients You'll Need

Gathering your supplies is half the fun! Surprisingly simple, this recipe calls for ingredients you likely already have in your pantry. Not super obscure, hard to find ingredients. Just good, honest-to-goodness baking essentials.

  • For the brownies:
    • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted (Don't skimp on the butter!)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
    • 4 large eggs
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 cup all-purpose flour
    • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
    • 1 cup chopped apples, the firmer kind. Both Granny Smith and Honeycrisp work great, I find.
  • Optional but highly recommended:
    • Chocolate chips- because one can never have enough chocolate
    • Sprinkle of cinnamon- for that added warmth and zing!

Baking Instructions in Steps

Great, let's bake! Follow these easy steps, and you'll be rewarded with deliciously moist and chewy apple brownies. I promise! Remember, even if something goes slightly wrong, don't panic. Baking is all about experimentation and learning. What's the worst that can happen? You end up with an interesting story to tell-and maybe a few crumbs to sneak.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the melted butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy. This is my favorite part!
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add to wet ingredients until just combined. Do not overmix! Overmixing = tough brownies!
  5. Gently fold in chopped apples and chocolate chips, if using. Chocolate chips are not optional in my world.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pan; spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached. If it comes out completely clean, they're probably overbaked.
  8. Let the brownies cool completely in the pan before cutting and serving. This is the hardest part, but trust me, it's worth the wait!

Serving Suggestions and Storage

These brownies are great as they are, but you can surely give them a higher notch! A scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream will always do the magic. Warm brownies, along with a cup of coffee or tea, is the ultimate indulgence. Leftovers? You'll be lucky if you have any - these keep well, stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to a week.

I hope you enjoyed this recipe and maybe even picked up a thing or two! This recipe just goes to show that sometimes, the most unlikely flavor combos turn out to be some of the tastiest treats. So go ahead, be adventurous, experiment in the kitchen. And remember, even if your first attempt is a little…rustic…well, don't give up. The perfect brownie, like any perfect baked good, is always just one more try away!
