Ah, I confess, I used to be a hardcore dairy milk drinker. Then, later on, I started trying all these plant-based alternatives, and wow, oat milk is simply my favorite. It's so creamy, smooth, and actually quite versatile. I do my coffee with it, my cereal, smoothies, and even bake with it. It also has many health benefits associated with it. Therefore, oat milk is what you need to get the best taste and nutrition in milk. Here's an easy guide to make it yourself.

Getting Started: Oats & Water

These are the things you'll be needing:

  • 1 cup rolled oats (not instant)
  • 4 cups water - filtered is best

This will make a decent batch; for more, simply double up the ingredients!

The Blending Process:

Now, this is where the magic happens. Add those oats and water to a high-speed blender and blend until it's smooth and creamy. You may have to add a bit more water for that silky feel. It might take a few minutes, but don't stop until it's fully smooth. You don't want any gritty bits in your oat milk, do you?

Strain It Up:

After blending, strain the oat milk through a cheesecloth or nut milk bag. This will separate the oat milk from the pulp. Don't throw that pulp away, though! You can use it in smoothies, bread, or even to make oat milk pancakes! But, we'll talk about that another time.

Store It Wisely:

You can store your homemade oat milk in the refrigerator up to 3 days in an airtight container. Just be sure to give it a good shake before you use it. I personally think that it tastes best cold, but hey, to each their own!

Reasons Why Oat Milk Is Awesome:

OK, other than the fact that it's delicious and effortless to make, oat milk is just full of goodness:

  • It's Gluten-Free: Great news for all you gluten-sensitive people! Oat milk is gluten-free, naturally, so you can go ahead and indulge in it.
  • Nutrient-Dense: A good source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals, plus low in fat and calories, which turns it into a great source of receiving your daily dose of dairy-free goodness.
  • It's Eco-Friendly: Oat milk does not harm the environment as much as other milk options do. It requires less water and land to grow, so therefore it's better for the planet!
