The Basil Dream: Why It's So Hard (And Why You Should Care)
Remember that feeling of biting into a fresh basil leaf, the burst of flavor that just screams summer? It's pretty amazing, right? But, what happens when it's winter and you're craving that taste? I used to just resign myself to the blandness of dried basil-don't even get me started on the flavor difference! But a few years ago, a friend of mine mentioned to me that she was growing her own basil indoors all year round, and it was like a whole new world opened up! The fact that fresh basil could be only a few steps away, even in the dead of winter, was incomprehensible to me. That's when my quest to conquer the indoor basil growing game began, and man, it wasn't always easy! But I'm here to share what I've learned so that you too can have fresh basil any time of the year, no matter the weather.
The Challenges of Growing Basil Indoors
Let's face it, growing basil indoors can be as easy as trying to tame a wild horse. It's a little bit of a challenge, but absolutely doable. Basil is a little diva when it comes to light, soil, and temperature. It's super fussy, though it doesn't take that much to make it happy when you grasp what it wants. You have to be patient and consistent to keep this little herb alive. And trust me, biting into that perfectly grown basil leaf will make all the effort worthwhile.
Keys to Success Beyond the Obvious
Basil loves a lot of light-mean 6-8 hours each day. No need to freak out and make a greenhouse in your living room; a sunny windowsill will be just fine. During the winter, however, you might want to invest in one grow light. Think of them as artificial suns, giving your basil what it needs to really thrive.
