I can still remember how my family would go to the carnival as a child. The smell of fried dough and popcorn was almost intoxicating; I had the real sense it was an adventure! But now, as an adult, those prices are just outrageous. So I've decided to bring the carnival fun to my backyard with some easy, delicious fair food recipes you can make in the convenience of your home.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup butter 1 cup packed light brown sugar 1/2 cup corn syrup 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 12 cups popped popcorn 1/2 cup chopped peanuts, optional

Instructions:

Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar, corn syrup, and salt. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to low; simmer 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

  • Sugar

Instructions:

  1. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your cotton candy maker.
  2. Put the sugar in the cotton candy maker.
  3. Start the machine; as the sugar melts, it will start to spin into those flossy strands of cotton candy!

Ingredients:

  • 12 mini hot dogs
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

  1. Whisk together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar in a large bowl.

  5. Pour the batter into a funnel and with care pour the batter in a circular pattern into the hot oil.
  6. Cook the funnel cake until it is golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes.
