1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). This is crucial for even cooking. Don't skip this step!
2. Remove the ham from its packaging and place it in your large roasting pan. If your ham came with a glaze packet, set it aside for later. We're making our own!
3. Score the ham (this is optional, but highly recommended). Use a sharp knife to make 1/2-inch deep diagonal cuts across the top of the ham. This helps the glaze penetrate the ham for better flavor and browning.
4. In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup honey, 1/2 cup whiskey (I like using a good quality bourbon), 1/4 cup Dijon mustard, and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
5. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring constantly. Let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes, or until it slightly thickens. This is your amazing glaze!
6. Once the glaze has thickened, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly. You don't want to burn yourself!
7. Pour about half of the glaze over the scored ham, using a basting brush to coat it evenly. Reserve the remaining glaze for later.
8. Bake the ham for approximately 15-20 minutes per pound. This is just a guideline; the exact time will depend on the size of your ham. We'll use a meat thermometer for accuracy!
9. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the ham. It's done when it reaches an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C).
10. Once the ham reaches the correct temperature, remove it from the oven and let it rest for at least 15 minutes before carving. This allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in a more tender and flavorful ham. Don't rush this!
11. While the ham rests, brush the remaining glaze over the ham. This adds extra flavor and shine.
12. Once the ham has rested, carve it and serve immediately. Enjoy your amazing Christmas ham with everyone you love!
