This Basil-infused Gin is ridiculously easy to make, but tastes incredibly sophisticated. It's perfect for a warm evening on the patio or a summer gathering with friends, but you should probably make it for yourself first; it's that good. Trust me, you'll be impressed by how the subtle sweetness of the simple syrup complements the herbaceous notes of the basil and the bold character of the gin. It's a real game changer!

I first discovered this recipe during a trip to Italy. I was at this little, family-run restaurant in Tuscany and had the most incredible cocktail which had this amazing flavor. I tried to recreate it when I got home and, well, that's how I stumbled across this creation. It's slightly different to that original, but equally delicious. I've since tweaked it a little, and now I’m sharing my perfected version with you, hoping you’ll be just as thrilled as I was when I first tasted it!

📖 Instructions

  1. First thing's first: gather your ingredients. Make sure your gin is nice and chilled. This is really important; you don't want a warm cocktail, trust me!
  2. Grab about 10-12 fresh basil leaves – more if you really love that basil flavor. Give them a quick rinse under cold water and gently pat them dry. Nobody likes soggy basil.
  3. Now for the fun part: muddling! Gently muddle the basil leaves in the bottom of your mixing glass. You're not trying to pulverize them into nothingness, just to bruise them a bit and release their aromatic oils.
  4. Add the gin! Use your jigger to measure out 2 ounces of gin. It's all about precision my friends! Add it to the muddled basil. I recommend using a quality gin; the flavour really shines in this recipe.
  5. Next, add your sweetener. Start with 3/4 of an ounce of simple syrup, but taste as you go. You might want to add more or less depending on your sweet tooth!
  6. Add ice! Fill your cocktail shaker with ice, then add the gin, basil, and simple syrup mixture.
  7. Shake, shake, shake! Give it a good, vigorous shake for about 15 seconds. Until it’s well chilled and slightly diluted. This makes the drink better.
  8. Strain into a chilled coupe or martini glass. Use a Hawthorne strainer to catch those pesky basil leaves. You don't want to end up chewing on basil during your precious sip!
  9. Garnish with a fresh basil sprig! Because presentation matters, people!
  10. Admire your masterpiece! Take a moment to appreciate the beautiful color and the intoxicating aroma of your homemade basil-infused gin. Savor the refreshing taste; it’s so worth it!

📝 Notes

  • Adjust simple syrup to your preference.
  • Use high-quality gin for the best flavor.
  • Make sure to gently muddle the basil leaves. Don't over-muddli them!
