Imagine biting into a warm, slightly sweet, and perfectly golden arepa. Now, imagine that arepa is made with ripe, sweet plantains. That’s exactly what you get with these sweet plantain arepas – a delightful twist on a classic South American staple. These arepas are not only delicious but also a fantastic way to use up those plantains that are just a bit too ripe to enjoy on their own. They are also easy to make, even if you've never tried your hand at Latin American cooking before. I can recall a time when I was skeptical, and now I make them weekly. The end result is almost too good to believe, try it for yourself and see what I mean. I can almost guarantee this recipe will become a household favorite in no time. You could even impress your family with it!
What makes these arepas special is the combination of the masa harina (corn flour) and the sweet plantains. The masa harina provides the traditional arepa texture, while the plantains add a natural sweetness and a hint of tropical flavor. It’s a match made in culinary heaven! These arepas are incredibly versatile. You can enjoy them plain as a sweet snack, or you can fill them with savory ingredients for a balanced meal. Think cheese, avocado, shredded meat, or even black beans. The possibilities are endless!
One thing I love about making these arepas is that they're naturally gluten-free, making them a great option for those with dietary restrictions. Plus, they're relatively healthy, especially if you choose wholesome fillings. These aren't your average gluten free option, I can tell you that much. I have a sister with celiac disease, and she adores it. Whether you’re looking for a unique breakfast idea, a satisfying lunch, or a delightful snack, these sweet plantain arepas are sure to hit the spot. So, grab those ripe plantains and let's get cooking!

📖 Instructions
Peel the Plantains: Start by peeling the ripe plantains. They should be mostly black with just a little bit of yellow. The riper, the better!
Mash the Plantains: In a large mixing bowl, mash the plantains until they’re smooth. A potato masher works great for this, but a fork will do in a pinch. Make sure there arent any large lumps.
Combine Dry Ingredients: Add the masa harina, salt, and any spices (like cinnamon, if using) to the mashed plantains. Mix well to combine. The mixture will seem dry at first, but keep mixing!
Add Water Gradually: Slowly add the warm water, mixing with your hands until a soft, pliable dough forms. The dough should be moist but not sticky. If it’s too dry, add a bit more water, a teaspoon at a time. If it's too sticky, add a bit more masa harina, also a teaspoon at a time.
Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 2-3 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. This step helps develop the texture of the arepas.
Let the Dough Rest: Cover the dough with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rest for about 10 minutes. This allows the masa harina to fully hydrate, making the arepas easier to shape.
Divide the Dough: Divide the dough into equal portions. For medium-sized arepas, aim for about 6-8 portions. Roll each portion into a ball.
Shape the Arepas: Flatten each ball into a disc about ½ inch thick. You can do this by pressing them between your palms or using a rolling pin. If the dough sticks, place the balls between two sheets of parchment paper while flattening them.
Heat the Skillet: Heat a lightly oiled cast iron skillet or griddle over medium heat. The skillet is ready when a drop of water sizzles on the surface.
Cook the Arepas: Place the arepas on the hot skillet, making sure not to overcrowd it. Cook for about 5-7 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and slightly crispy. If they are browning too quickly, reduce the heat.
Finish Cooking (Optional): For a softer interior, you can finish cooking the arepas in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for about 10-15 minutes after they’ve been browned on the skillet. This step is optional but recommended for thicker arepas.
Serve and Enjoy: Serve the sweet plantain arepas warm. They're delicious on their own, but even better with your favorite fillings. Cheese, avocado, shredded meat, or even just a dollop of sour cream all work wonderfully. I like them with a little bit of queso fresco.
📝 Notes
For extra flavor, add ¼ teaspoon of ground cinnamon to the dough.
Adjust the amount of water depending on the moisture content of your plantains.
