I first discovered this drink during a trip to India, and it completely blew me away! The flavors are so unique, it is quite different from other drinks out there; it combines sweet, spicy, and a bit tart. Now I make it all the time, especially when I feel a little under the weather. What's even better? It's incredibly simple to make!

📖 Instructions

  1. First, peel and finely chop about an inch of fresh ginger. You'll want to use a sharp knife and don't rush this part; safety first, right? If you're not a big fan of chopping, you can always find pre-grated ginger in most supermarkets. But honestly, fresh is always best!
  2. Next, grab about a teaspoon of turmeric powder. Remember that turmeric can stain, so maybe don't wear your best white shirt while making this! Add the ginger and turmeric to a small saucepan along with two cups of water. We’re making a potent concoction, my friend!
  3. Now, put the saucepan on medium heat. Stir occasionally, making sure the turmeric doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan. I swear, this happens to me all the time! Let it simmer gently for about 10 minutes. It’s like a mini meditation at this point, the low simmer, the fragrant steam...very relaxing
  4. After simmering, remove the saucepan from the heat and let the mixture cool slightly. Strain the liquid through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a mug to remove the solids. Don't skip this step; otherwise, you'll end up drinking a muddy concoction and it will be sad!
  5. Once strained, stir in a tablespoon or two of agave nectar (or your chosen sweetener) to taste. Some prefer it sweeter than others, and that's perfectly okay! Add a squeeze of lime juice. This adds a wonderful zing to cut through the warmth of the ginger and turmeric.
  6. Finally, give it a little stir and it's ready to enjoy! Sip slowly and savor the soothing warmth. It is a feel-good drink for the soul. Trust me on this one!

📝 Notes

  • Adjust the amount of agave nectar to your preferred level of sweetness.
  • Feel free to experiment with different spices, such as cinnamon or cardamom.
  • If you don't have fresh ginger, you can substitute with 1 teaspoon of ground ginger.
  • For a creamier version, blend in a splash of milk or coconut milk at the end. I like it without, but that is my personal preference!
