Hey fellow adventurers! Let's be honest, nothing ruins a fantastic hike more than a stomach rumbling with hunger, especially after a long strenuous climb or a difficult trail. This Hiking Trail Fruit Platter is my solution to the mid-hike munchies. It's simple, refreshing, and totally customizable. Think vibrant colors, delicious textures, and a burst of sweetness to fuel your adventure. Plus, it’s a million times better than those sad energy bars that always get stuck in your teeth.

I came up with this recipe after a particularly grueling hike last fall. My friend Mark forgot his snacks, and we were absolutely starving before we even reached the summit. Let's just say, the hike back was not pleasant! That's when I decided to create the perfect on-trail snack that's easy to transport, doesn't require refrigeration until later, and is full of natural energy. This recipe is perfect for a picnic, too!

📖 Instructions

  1. Wash all fruits thoroughly. This is crucial—no one wants a gritty apple in their trail mix!
  2. Prepare the fruits for cutting. Remove stems, peel where appropriate, and discard any bruised or damaged areas. I usually give the citrus a good scrub under hot running water.
  3. Begin chopping. Cut the larger fruits like melons and pineapples into bite-sized chunks. Smaller fruits such as grapes and berries can remain whole.
  4. Slice up your apples, pears, and bananas into pleasing, even slices. You could make these into wedges, chunks, or however else suits you!
  5. If using citrus fruits, use your citrus juicer (or your hands!) to squeeze some juice over the cut apples and bananas to prevent browning—it's so annoying when they turn brown before you get a chance to eat them!
  6. Once you're satisfied that you've got a satisfying range of shapes, sizes, and colors, its time to arrange your fruit platter.
  7. Arrange the fruits on your serving platter or board. Consider arranging by color and size for an eye-catching display. Create small visual stacks and clusters which are really pleasing to look at.
  8. Consider adding a few sprigs of fresh mint or other herbs (if you are taking those on your hike) for a touch of visual flair and a burst of freshness.
  9. Before heading out, carefully wrap your platter in plastic wrap or place it in a sealed container to protect it during transport.
  10. Once you reach your hiking destination, find a nice, clean spot to enjoy your Hiking Trail Fruit Platter. And don't forget the photos for Instagram!

📝 Notes

  • Adjust the quantities of fruits based on your preferences and serving size. Feel free to get creative and use any combination of your favourite fruits.
  • Always use fresh and ripe fruit for the best flavor and texture.
  • If bringing this in a backpack, be extra careful of delicate fruits like berries and strawberries, which are prone to getting squashed
